A multi-institutional group led by Professor Liu has been awarded the Research Grants Council (RGC) Strategic Topics Grant (STG). The STG supports collaborative, interdisciplinary research that addresses Hong Kong’s imminent challenges and leverages opportunities arising from the National 14th Five-Year Plan. Professor Liu’s project focuses on advancing Hong Kong’s pathway to carbon neutrality before 2050 through blue carbon ecosystems.
Project title:
Coastal Blue Carbon Ecosystems in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area: Carbon Sequestration Capacity, Biogeochemical and Microbial Processes, and Control Mechanisms
Details:
Through investigation the carbon sequestration potential of coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrasses in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, the research will analyze these ecosystems’ capacity to store carbon while facing environmental threats, develop restoration strategies, and create models to predict their contribution to achieving carbon neutrality goals.
Approved budget:
HK$31.0 million (including funding from the RGC and matching funds from the participating universities)
